Terrorism – Challenge of our Times

-Terrorism is a big problem
-Terror mastermind killed by SEAL commandoes
-9/11 and 26/11 are etched in the memories of people
-Terror elements know no religion or values
-If Kashmir is made a separate state, serious International conflict will erupt.
-Godhra (train) and Akshardham temple were attacked.
-The citizens of the world must unite to eliminate terrorism.

In April 2013, when the bomb blasted at the end of Boston Marathon, killing and injuring many people, United States of America was once again jolted by the ugly force of terrorism. Similarly, bomb blasts at Hyderabad in March 2013 and near BJP office in Bangalore on 17th April 2013, have shown that the terrorists are very active.

Use of violence or threat by group or individuals to achieve political goals  can be called as terrorism. It is the spread of terror. The destruction of property and people by anti-social groups or individuals is terrorism. It consists of a serried of act planned to spread panic and destruction in a group, community or area.

Terrorism poses the big threats to mankind. These people know no friends and recognize no rules. Flight hijacking, bomb blasts, killing people at point blank range and hijacking ships for ransom are the examples of terror activities. All sane people of the world must condemn and oppose these acts tooth and nail. The 9/11 massacre, the 26/11 massacre, the burning of train at Godhra, the Akshardham firing case and the attack on parliament are all examples of terror actions. The militants of Kashmir want to have a free State. The impossible situation, if at all created could lead to world war III. Militants do not understand this.

Two kinds of terrorism are noticed: political terrorism which creates panic on a large scale and criminal terrorism which deals in kidnapping to take ransom. Political terrorism is much more dangerous than criminal terrorism as they are well trained and it has become a challenge for law enforcing agencies. For example, hundreds of terrorists are being trained in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK). Further, the terrorists of Punjab are also receiving training and weapons from Pakistan. Assam has been the most unstable State in the last few decades. Assam remains the only State in the northeast where terrorism is a major issue. Terrorism has also spread at national level. But the Regional terrorism is the most violent of all. This is because the terrorists think that dying in terrorist act is sacred. So, they are willing to do anything.

Terrorism is a world-wide problem. By now, the governments throughout the world are realizing that terrorism is a serious threat to dealt with. They believe in the power of bombs and guns over dialogue. Terrorist acts are well-planned. Every terrorist acts usually takes days and even months of preparation. Terrorists are usually young, but those who manipulate them are aged and seasoned politicians. Terrorists mostly recruit younger people in their group as it is easy to brainwash them. Freedom is the right of every individual. But our freedom is taken away from us when terrorist strikes.

The USA was shocked when Afghanistan-based terrorist organizations attacked it. On 11th September 2011, New York city witnessed the most devastating terrorist attack in the history. Two hijacked planes were flown straight into the World Trade Centre. Six thousand people were killed. This violent act of terrorism was masterminded by Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. After this attack, many challenges were faced by all the nations.

Subsequently, the Anti-terrorist laws were strictly enforced in India. However, many people accused as terrorists have not been sentenced. The courts have not pronounced the judgements in many terrorist attack cases. Unless the justice delivery system responds quickly, steps taken for controlling the incidence of terrorism may not be effective.

One of the terrible terrorist attacks in India was the 1993 Bombay bombings. It was a series of thirteen bombs which exploded one after another. The explosions were the most destructive in Indian history. It is believed that the explosions were coordinated by Dawood Ibrahim, the leader of a terrorist group which opposes India.

In Operation Neptune Sphere, the special marine SEAL commandoes finally killed Osama Bin Laden who was hiding in Pakistan. On 2nd May 2012, he was shot dead. The plan of this secret operation was not shared by the USA with Pakistan government.

Terrorism has become a global threat and needs to be controlled from the grass root level to the global level. It cannot be controlled by the law enforcing agencies alone. The world has to unite to eliminate this threat.
